With minimal direction, the Sr. Materials Laboratory Technician conducts both routine and non-routine, complex testing and characterization activities for our thermoplastic materials products. The role will perform technical activities leading to new or improved products or processes that have significant impact on the company. This role is responsible for assuring high quality mechanical, thermal, and chemical testing of 3D-printed parts, raw materials, and consumables.  Assignments include performing tests, documenting test results, analyzing test data, setting up test equipment, communicating proactively with Materials and Research Engineers, and calibrating and maintaining test equipment and 3D printers. Responsibilities also include management, upkeep, and ongoing improvement of a polymer characterization and research lab.




Performs testing to assure that products meet their specifications and will perform successfully in the field.

  • Efficiently executes mechanical, thermal and chemical tests to assess performance of 3D-printed parts and materials with a high degree of complexity.
  • Prioritizes testing to meet the needs of the team and based on risk.
  • Organizes, coordinates, and executes testing per engineering instructions.
  • Proactively and quickly resolves issues that occur during testing. 
  • Coordinates and Troubleshoots repair or maintenance of broken or malfunctioning test equipment and 3D Printers. Conducts basic repairs as needed.
  • Performs a wide variety of non-routine and complex analytical tests with minimal direction.
  • Works with requestors and engineers to determine the types of tests that will be required.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert in multiple areas of physical, thermal and mechanical testing.
  • Develops a working knowledge of the mechanical, electrical, software, controls, and materials systems in our 3D printers.  Uses that knowledge to assure proper testing of our materials and printed parts.


Drives and sustains improvements in materials testing

  • Proactively and independently creates and improves tests. 
  • Makes recommendations on how to improve our testing and analysis capability.
  • Coordinates cross-functionally to align R&D methods to Quality Control Standards
  • Performs regular calibrations and quality checks on equipment
  • Participates in interlaboratory testing and adjusts methods and equipment as needed.
  • Implements safety measures and ensures that safety protocols are being followed.
  • Research new test methods, tools, and equipment to improve how we do testing. Makes sound recommendations on adopting new testing approaches and on the purchase of new test tools.
  • Stays up to date on new testing tools and processes. 
  • Works with a vague definition of the need and helps define the requirements


Provides high quality, clear documentation and communicates effectively

  • Proactively communicates with stakeholders, including status, issues, schedule, and budget.
  • Reports and documents any machine or test issues.
  • Documents, graphs, and performs calculations in Excel.
  • Performs statistical analysis of results using tools such as Minitab.
  • Analyzes and summarizes test data.
  • Writes clear, concise test reports that document test results.  Organizes test reports and data for easy retrieval.
  • Creates test plans for small projects.


Collaborates and works cross functionally with team members

  • Proactively communicates schedule and status.
  • Anticipates and meets needs of the project team.
  • Actively engages with the project team on important topics such as test issues and how to accomplish the team's goals.
  • Collaborates with Operations Process Engineers, Quality Engineers, and Quality Test Technicians to resolve product performance issues quickly.
  • Makes sound recommendations to improve the reliability and performance of our products.



  • Associate degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or equivalent work experience in a physical, mathematical science, or engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years overall experience
  • 5+ years hand-on experience and proficiency with analytical equipment such as capillary and rotational rheometers, DSC, TGA, DMA, and FTIR, or similar analytical or chemical characterization techniques.
  • 5+ years’experience with mechanical, thermal, and analytical testing of materials or chemicals
  • 2+ years’ experience with data analysis software such as Excel or Minitab
  • 2+ years’ experience in the upkeep and maintenance of an analytical laboratory




  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or equivalent physical, mathematical science, or engineering discipline
  • 2+ years’ experience using 3D printers.
  • Experience in repair and maintenance of electromechanical systems
  • Experience in test method development and validation
  • Experience with CAD or drafting software
  • Experience with design and fabrication of test fixtures
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Previous work experience in a plastics, polymers, or chemicals manufacturing environment
  • Proficiency and understanding of physical properties of plastics and polymers
  • Familiar with sample preparation techniques, microscopy and image processing software
  • Experience troubleshooting IT systems and electromechanical equipment
