Position description
The Commodity Manager – Mechanical develops and executes global sourcing strategies for mechanical commodities, including precision-machined components, sheet metal and fabricated assemblies, castings, extrusions, injection-molded parts, standard hardware, and related mechanical assemblies. This role owns supplier relationships, cost, quality, tooling, capacity, and supply continuity across the mechanical commodity portfolio. Working closely with Engineering, Operations, and Quality, you will support new product development and ongoing production by securing competitive, capable, and reliable sources of supply.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Develop and execute multi-year sourcing strategies for assigned mechanical commodities to optimize total cost of ownership, supply assurance, quality, manufacturability, and innovation.
- Lead RFI, RFQ, and RFP events; conduct should-cost and benchmarking analyses; and drive competitive bidding for machined parts, sheet metal and fabrications, castings, extrusions, injection-molded components, standard hardware, and related assemblies.
- Analyze raw-material indices, manufacturing processes, tooling, labor, capacity, and regional market dynamics to identify risks and opportunities and deliver annual cost-reduction targets.
- Own end-to-end supplier relationships, including performance scorecards, business reviews, capability assessments, and continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Negotiate pricing, contracts, payment and delivery terms, tooling provisions, and long-term agreements that deliver measurable value.
- Manage supplier risk, including financial health, geographic concentration, single-source exposure, manufacturing capacity, and critical tooling; partner with Quality on corrective actions, first article inspection, process qualification, and defect reduction.
- Partner with Engineering during new product introduction to influence design for cost, manufacturability, quality, and supply availability, including material and process selection, drawing and specification reviews, supplier qualification, tooling strategy, and alternate sourcing.
- Apply design-for-manufacturability and value-engineering principles to improve component cost and scalability.
- Monitor and mitigate constrained capacity, tooling failures, raw-material volatility, long lead times, and single-source dependencies to help ensure uninterrupted production.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, or a related field.
- At least five years of progressive experience in procurement, strategic sourcing, or commodity management, including direct ownership of mechanical commodities such as precision-machined parts, sheet metal and fabricated assemblies, castings, extrusions, injection-molded components, standard hardware, or related mechanical assemblies.
- Demonstrated success negotiating supplier contracts and long-term agreements and delivering year-over-year cost reductions.
- Strong should-cost modeling and data-analysis skills, with working knowledge of mechanical manufacturing processes, technical drawings and specifications, and tooling economics.
- Proficiency with ERP/MRP systems such as SAP or Oracle and Microsoft Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in a manufacturing, industrial equipment, or hardware-driven industry with complex mechanical components and assemblies.
- Familiarity with new product introduction, design for manufacturability, value engineering, and design-for-cost or design-for-supply principles.
- Professional certification such as CPSM, C.P.M., APICS, or CPIM.
- Experience managing global suppliers across multiple regions.
